So why do wide-angle lenses often produce distorted perspective relationships, such as the root cause of the weird nose in the example? Because the wide-angle lens is often used to shoot very close to the subject, the closer the shooting distance is, the stronger the perspective effect is.
If all the lenses are used at the same distance, the wide-angle lens will not distort the perspective more than any other lens. In fact, it is not difficult to prove this through experiments. Take a row of columns or trees or any row of objects with different focal lengths, take all the photos in the same position, and then enlarge the same part of each image, so as to get the same size image on the photo. Finally, regardless of the focal length of the lens used, no difference in perspective can be seen in any photo. The reason is that the shooting distance of all photos is the same, that is, the distance from the subject to the lens is the same.
Now, let's go back to the big nose in the close-up. The tip of the nose is about an inch closer to the camera than the rest of the face. Because the closer the subject is, the larger it will appear, so when you are close to the camera, the nose will appear disproportionately larger than the rest of the face. So why does wide angle lens make this distortion more significant? Because in order to make the portrait full of the picture, the wide-angle lens must be very close to the subject. For any kind of lens, when it is very close to the subject to a certain extent, it will produce this distortion. The closer to the subject, the more serious the distortion. It is precisely because we want the subject to fill the picture, and just into the distortion range of the wide-angle lens.
